HGV drivers (or couriers!) rarely get a thought when exciting new products hit our supermarket shelves. In fact, they don\u2019t. The only time they really come to mind (unless you are the manager of a supply chain) is when an arctic monster is seemingly blocking your way on the motorway. But what would we do without them? With the current shortage of HGV drivers \u2013 the effects of which is sweeping the UK \u2013 the consumer and the business manager is finding out fast.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which Industries Are Affected?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Driver shortages is having an effect on\r\nhow products reach the shelves of your favourite supermarket. The crisis is\r\nplaying havoc with supply chains and the ability of couriers to get deliveries\r\nto destinations on time. And it\u2019s not just supermarkets who are feeling the\r\npinch \u2013 some pubs are complaining that they are now lacking the supply of\r\ncertain brand beers. For a short-time, a well-known restaurant chain had to\r\nclose simply because it did not have the ingredients to cook meals to an\r\nacceptable standard. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Manufacturing Industries Hit By Shortage Of Couriers<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Petrol too has been affected. One of the biggest brands \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">BP<\/a> \u2013 has had to close a number of its UK sites because it could not offer petrol and diesel. But it is perhaps the manufacturing industries who are being affected the most. For the consumer, at the moment, this tends to go unseen as it is parts of products which are not being delivered to factories. This includes furniture, car parts, electrical goods, cement and timber. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Origins Of The Crisis<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A recent estimate by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rha.uk.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Road Haulage Association<\/a> has stated there is now a shortage of more than 100,000 drivers across the UK. Both Covid and Brexit have played a part in the crisis. As restrictions took a hold during lockdown, tens of thousands of European drivers decided to go home and have never returned due to new Brexit regulations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Whereas before, when the UK was part\r\nof a single market, European drivers (travelling long distances) could come and\r\ngo as they pleased, now there is added bureaucracy which many European drivers\r\nhave rejected. In many cases, drivers are paid by the hour and delays at\r\nborders costs money. European drivers and couriers are finding it is more\r\nlucrative to work within the single market itself. <strong>F<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are More Couriers Or HGV Drivers Needed?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The UK industry of course tried to\r\nfill the employee gap but the pandemic also caused a backlog of HGV drivers\r\ntests. Consequently, there has been around 25,000 fewer candidates for the test\r\nin 2020 than in 2019. EU nationals have also turned their back on UK HGV\r\ncourier jobs because the value of the pound has fallen since the UK left the\r\nsingle market and because recent tax changes make it more expensive to work in\r\nthe UK<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Perhaps the one good thing about the\r\ncrisis is it has brought the HGV drivers into the spotlight. Haulage companies\r\nare quick to point out how vital HGV drivers are to the UK economy. Hence, unions\r\nare looking for much better conditions for their employees. With an average age\r\nof 55 for HGV drivers, it is generally felt that there is a real need to\r\nattract younger UK drivers and couriers. There is also a strong feeling that\r\npay should be increased.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government And Private Businesses Try To Solve The Problem<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Both private companies and the\r\ngovernment are looking at ways to ease the problem. For instance, Tesco is\r\noffering drivers a \u00a31000 joining bonus while Aldi has increased wages for\r\ndrivers. The government on the other hand has met criticism with its decision\r\nto increase the amount of hours that a driver is allowed to be on the road\r\n(from 9 hours to 11) without taking a break.
