Additionally, blockchain is not managed by a single\r\nentity.  Millions of computers around the\r\nworld continually validate the chain. \r\nThere is no centralised version of the information, limiting the chance\r\nof corruption or hacking.  It would take\r\na lot of computing power to override the wishes of all the users connected to\r\nthe entire network.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Blockchain and\r\nlogistics<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Supply chains are going to be impacted by the development of\r\nblockchain technology.  This has been\r\ncalled the fourth industrial revolution, and all industrial revolutions have\r\nhad a powerful impact on the supply chain. \r\nFirst the canals, then the trains, then the computer and now global,\r\ndemocratic interconnectivity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

One of the most exciting developments has been deployed\r\nsuccessfully by companies like Tesla.  A\r\ndigital twin allows a company to produce a dynamic, digital representation of\r\nan asset and then track its past, present and future performance throughout the\r\nproduct’s lifecycle.  This would allow a\r\ncompany to quickly reflect on efficiencies and innovations that could be made \u2013\r\nanywhere within the supply chain.  It\r\nwould become like a digital passport that is stamped at each stage of the\r\ndevelopment and distribution of a product. \r\nIn short, blockchain could provide a practical data management service\r\nfor companies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Another development for logistics companies could be the\r\nopportunity to circumvent international borders to maintain a constant flow of\r\ncomplex information.  The digital twin\r\ninformation can be shared with all stakeholders in the supply chain.  <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

There are current packages that attempt to give this level\r\nof transparency to all links in the supply chain.  However, this is troubled by issues of Big\r\nData or handling large amounts of real-time data.  It also relies on one organisation in the\r\nchain taking the lead and therefore reduces the democracy of access to data.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Creating a digital twin allows data to be updated in\r\nreal-time, moving without friction across international borders, and therefore\r\nbuilding trust and cooperation between partners.  Every link in the supply chain can review and\r\nreflect on performance data from the lifecycle of the product.  <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Such information could allow collaboration across the chain\r\nto make more efficient and effective decisions \u2013 mainly when looking to improve\r\na delivery service.  There is also talk\r\nof the possibilities of blockchain facilitating an automated supply chain \u2013\r\nsending out just in time requests literally spot on time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

However, on a simple level, blockchain could simplify the\r\nmanagement of agreements and contracts, the tracking of products and the\r\nnecessary payment for services.  As\r\ncomplexity often breaks most supply chains, blockchain could offer a simple way\r\nto seek an overview.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

What should UK\r\ncouriers take away from this?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Blockchain has been troubled by its connection to Bitcoin\r\nand the volatility of the financial markets. \r\nHowever, this is just one, limited application of blockchain technology.\r\nThe potentials of blockchain continue to be explored by innovators and\r\ninventors across the globe \u2013 and are of interest to delivery services\r\nparticularly.  <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

There is a healthy interest in understanding how this\r\ntechnology can benefit most sectors, and a supply chain could be one that\r\nbenefits the most.
